My name is Cat and I run Arty Cats, which provides art classes for primary school students from Years 3 to 6.
Art has been a passion for me for as long as I can remember. Spending time at my desk drawing or painting is my way to relax while at the same time sharpen my mind and constantly challenge myself.
In 2018, I started running after school art classes at Stanmore Public School. I had been thinking about getting into teaching art for years, and it's been such a wonderful experience. I have learned so much from the amazingly creative and talented kids in my classes, and it's been a joy to watch them create such a diverse range of beautiful and imaginative work.
In my teaching I seek to inspire and encourage students by introducing key concepts and techniques. As students learn, they are open to new possibilities and gain tools to help them express themselves. While developing technique is important, I also believe in giving children space to be imaginative and pursue what interests them.
I Have a Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in Painting from the University of New South Wales, and also a Master of Electronic Arts, majoring in Computer Animation, from the Australian National University. I have practised as an artist for over a decade, and have exhibited work in both solo and group shows across Australia and in Hong Kong.
My art went on hold for several years after I had my daughter Emily, now 6, and my son Toby who is 3. Now I am finding more time to get back into it, and do mostly drawing and painting from my small studio at home. I love anything to do with nature and biology, and have always been drawn to the strange and surreal. The main subject of my work is imaginary plants and animals.
